About Kathy Perl
Katherine Roberts Perl was born in Los Angeles, California, in 1949. She has played the harpsichord most of her life, switching instruments from piano at the age of thirteen. Coming of age during the 60s and 70s, her early music awareness happened to coincide with the revival of period instrument performance and practice. In the mid-seventies, she built herself a Zuckermann French double harpsichord from a kit designed by William Hyman, based on historical principles. Following its successful completion, Ms.Perl moved to San Francisco in 1977 to pursue an intensive course of study with Laurette Goldberg, culminating in a Masters diploma with a specialty in harpsichord performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
A highly sought after teacher and recitalist, Ms. Perl has made several critically acclaimed recordings. Her first, Pièces de Clavecin, Music of Louis Couperin (Koch International Classics), was nominated for an award by Les Victoires de la Musique Classique in Paris, France, for Best Baroque Recording of French Music in 1993. Her second recording, Music of Jacques Duphly (Dorian), was released in 1998, followed by four of Bach’s French Suites in the same year. In 2007-8, she recorded The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 2, on three discs and in 2013 she recorded Wandering Shades (Les Ombres Errantes) The final harpsichord works of Francois Couperin.
